THE IMPOSSIBLE DETAIL

Aurelia Drift is a vast glass conservatory carried between islands by slow atmospheric currents. Its annual Zenith Festival culminates in an artificial eclipse: the roof petals darken for exactly six minutes while a procession circles the central Dawn Dais. This year, when daylight returned, the ceremonial Sun Key—a brass-and-crystal instrument displayed on an open magnetic cradle—was gone. A violet ribbon lay near the western bridge, and a witness insisted that Archivist Nia Serrin had fled that way. Yet the bridge led nowhere useful, the eclipse controls had performed perfectly, and several devices told incompatible stories about where their owners had been.
